Central Nebraska’s Minority Health Initiative

by: Audrey Lutz

Why Are We Doing IT?

The literature review answers two valuable research questions. One, how do you adequately overcome health barriers for populations with validated mistrust against racist medical institutions? Two, if Community Health Workers (CHW) have the positive outcomes desired, how do you advocate for their incorporation into health systems without haphazard funding restrictions? The literature review will cover who CHWs are, barriers to their success, and introduce what success looks like in CHW programs.

Who Is Supporting Us?

The research speaks to the importance of culturally and linguistically aligned advocacy for underserved populations, especially for immigrants and racial-ethnic minority populations. This analysis covers three quantitative and three qualitative studies that speak to the research-based impetus for Community Health Workers in the Minority Health Initiative for Central Nebraska.

What are we doing?

Central District Health Department’s (CDHD) mission is to promote public health. Multicultural Coalition’s (MC) mission is to empower newcomers and long-term Central Nebraskans alike. Together, these two missions form the basis of the collaboration to serve minority populations through Community Health Workers. CDHD submitted their two-year proposal to work with MC to continue providing minority health services through Community Health Workers while collecting data via health assessments and community listening sessions.

How are we doing it?

Central Nebraska’s Minority Health Initiative is funded entirely by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and overseen by their Office of Health Disparities and Health Equity. The implementation plan discusses the Nebraska legislature’s role and the Health Care Cash Fund used to fund Minority Health Initiative projects. Finally, a strategic plan is laid out with the lead implementers and outcomes to accomplish the project’s goals.
